Why is this important?

Covid 19 is here to stay making personal infection more likely: imagine trying to avoid getting a common cold, not easy.

Making a proper vaccine may be difficult and take time

Even if you have recovered reinfection is possible and probable

The question is not will I get infected by Covid 19, it’s what can I do to alleviate symptoms and participate in crowed immunity

What will this post cover?

Some background about how Covid 19 affects human biology with a focus on the most common sites of action and some common sense suggestions of how to reduce the affects of Covid 19. Let’s begin.

Covid 19 enters cells in the body through proteins found in cell membranes. In this context proteins can be thought of as being a bit like markers or anchor points for other things. In this case it’s a virus that uses this anchor point on the surface of the cell. Once attached the virus enters the cell. The proteins in question include ACE2 and an a protein called Furin, although there may be others.

Areas in the body that have high concentrations of ACE2 protein include the alveoli (type 2) of the lungs, various of the body’s organs; arteries, heart, kidneys and intestines, the brain and more. Interestingly, parts of the brain that are involved in the process of smell and taste have nerve cells with ACE2 and are thought to be the site of action causing the symptoms of smell blindness in some Covid 19 patients.

As with any biological system protein pathways are complex with numerous chemicals that act to increase or decrease the amount of protein produced and how it behaves in the body. The result is an interconnected web of protein pathways that are not fully understood. Making using drugs a question only for professional medical experts and not for people who want to take pre-emptive action.

One of the most common sites of action of Covid 19 is the lungs thought to be due to the presence of ACE2 protein in cell membranes of lung cells. Let’s focus on the lungs and see what happens as it’s the most common cause of severe symptoms.

Mild symptoms of Covid 19 result when the effect of the virus is restricted to the upper and conducting airways. Resulting in a sore through and burning sensation. More serious symptoms result when the virus effects the gas exchange mechanism deep within the lungs.

After Covid 19 enters the Alveoli cells deep within the lungs it can cause a number of things to happen including a Cytokine Storm and affects certain protein pathways. A Cytokine storm induces the body’s immune system to quickly activate and attack the body’s own Alveolar lung cells causing cell death. After entering the cell and replicating totally un-checked infected cells burst open releasing more virus to infect other surrounding cells. A process of positive feedback increases cell damage and functioning of the gas exchange mechanism in the lungs.

The protein pathway mentioned above, which the virus targets, is the renin-angiotensin system involved in regulating blood pressure in various parts of the body. At the lungs activation of certain parts of this pathway have bad affects including vasoconstriction of the small blood vessels involved in the mechanism of gas exchange in the lungs. It also increases inflammation of alveolar cells and fibrosis which can produce chronic reduction in lung function.

Acute inflammation of lung cells are seen in pneumonia and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) both exacerbated by Covid 19. As a comparison chronic inflammation is represented by asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Due to the affects of inflammation, cell debris and junk proteins thrown out into the surrounding area due to cell death the blood flow to the lungs gets cluttered. Tiny clots form in the blood vessels involved in the gas exchange mechanism of the lung. Reducing the uptake of oxygen from the air deep in the lungs.

Pulmonary hypertension results from constriction of the blood vessels involved in the gas exchange mechanism of the lungs. Resulting in impaired oxygen uptake within the lungs. Pulmonary hypertension results from higher levels of Angiotensin 2: a protein produced in the renin-angiotensin system. Increased Angiotension 2 results in reduced blood flow to the lungs.

To summarise briefly, there are three causes of reduced lung function. Death of Alveoli cells deep in the lungs, tiny blood clots in the vessels supplying the gas exchange mechanism in the lungs, and pulmonary hypertension. All results in lower oxygen levels, which is not good.

What about Furin?

Furin is a protein that plays an essential role in the mechanism by which Covid 19 enters lung cells. The process of how Covid 19 interacts with the Furin protein is being investigated as a target site for producing a live vaccine.

So what can we do to restrict the affects of Covid 19 to the upper and conducting pathways and prevent the progression of the virus to other parts of the body that produce more serious symptoms? Here are some suggestions. These suggestions will also help reduce all symptoms as well as making you feel good.

Reduce the viral load by having a healthy immune system.

Reduce the affect of Covid 19 on cells deep in the lungs by helping reduce the amount of ACE2 protein.

Limit the effects of pulmonary hypertension.

Reduce the production of Furin protein

Reduce long term lung damage and fibrosis

It’s not quackery it’s common sense. Achieving the aims above through diet.

Reduce the viral load by having a healthy immune system. A generally healthy diet is always a good idea. Daily intake of vitamin C, anti oxidants, and foods containing other important factors in a healthy immune system. Here’s 14 ideas to get going with.

  1. Citrus fruits
  2. Red bell peppers
  3. Broccoli
  4. Garlic
  5. Ginger
  6. Spinach
  7. Yogurt
  8. Almonds
  9. Sunflower seeds
  10. Turmeric
  11. Green tea
  12. Kiwi
  13. Poultry
  14. Shellfish

Enhance mitochondria cell health. Healthy mitochondria are more efficient at using oxygen in the chemical processes required to produce energy for our body from the calories eaten. Healthy mitochondria are known to reduce the inflammation response. Here’s 9 ideas.

  1. regular exercise
  2. intermittent fasting
  3. Increase the amount of omega 3 fatty acids compared to the amount of omega 6 fatty acids you your diet.
  4. Antioxidant rich foods like grapes, red wine, dark chocolate, and pistachios that contain the plant molecule resveratrol.
  5. Get 7 to 8 hours sleep a night, going to bed and getting up at similar times.
  6. Reduce stress man, and try some meditation.
  7. Other compounds that help that are contained in food include, L-Carnitine and Alpha-Lipoic Acid.
  8. Short periods of cold. Ever wondered why athletes and people in sports take ice baths.
  9. Boosting level of NAD+ by eating food that gives you vitamin B3 like Tuna, Turkey and pork. Mushrooms, dairy milk, green veggies, and tomato help to increase precursors of NAD+.

Reduce the affect of Covid 19 on cells deep in the lungs by helping reduce the amount of ACE2 protein.

Foods that help inhibit the ACE 2 protein. Here’s 8.

  1. vegetable juice
  2. flaxseed
  3. pomegranate juice – also contain antioxidants that help strengthen the arteries and prevent blood from clotting
  4. beet-apple juice
  5. prunes
  6. dark chocolate
  7. hibiscus tea
  8. blue berries

Limit the effects of pulmonary hypertension

  • Reducing salt intake by using less table salt and eating less processed foods notoriously high in salt.
  • Avoid caffeine and alcohol.
  • Increase iron intake
  • Eat more garlic. Garlic helps to lower blood pressure.

Increase iron intake by using these suggestions, 21 of them.

  1. liver
  2. lean red meat
  3. chicken

How can you increase iron absorption?

Certain foods and drinks can affect iron absorption:

Tannins: tea may inhibit absorption of iron. For some people, avoiding drinking tea with food or straight after a meal may help improve iron absorption.

Vitamin C

To increase iron absorption, include foods that are high in vitamin C, or ascorbic acid, in the same meal as iron-rich foods.

Incorporate garlic into the diet

Garlic has as been shown to reduce cholesterol levels and blood pressure in patients who have hypertension. Among lots of other health benefits.

Help to open up the tiny blood vessels found supplying the lungs. Many of the compounds found in the food mentioned also help circulation generally and include many of the foods above.

  1. regular exercise
  2. food that get broken down into nitric oxide spinach
  3. eat chillies – capsaicin releases compounds that help expand blood vessels including nitric oxide.
  4. Onions
  5. Beets
