Racing Traders release a major update to the Bet Trader bet trading software series

An email hit our inbox recently.  Regular readers will know that we’ve posted about scalping on Betfair and have reviewed Betfair trading software at Let’s Compare Bets.   When it comes to bet trading on Betfair using scalping techniques one software provider performed very well and was reviewed favourably.   Bet Trader from Racing Traders is the software, and they have just released a new version called Evo (short for Evolution) 4.

What our reviewers like about Racning Traders is that it has been designed for scalping on Betfair and was possibly the first Betfair trading software to come to market.  Bet Trader was created by a guy who had experience of trading financial markets in the city, and decided to use the same techniques for trading odds on Betfair.   Any way, we don’t want this to turn into a unashamed advert, but, here’s a quick run down about what we like about Bet Trader.

It’s designed for scalping making it easier and faster to make scalp trades.  It’s unique compared to it’s competitors due to the features available in the free version, and the fact it has a training mode.  Also, price is a plus point.   Bet Trader evolution has evolved.  There has been a major update of Bet Trader Evolution.

Man United Vs Man City in the Charity Shield, goal betting for the 2011 premiership season

The start of the 2011 Barclay’s (mustn’t forget the sponsors) Premiership season is here. It’s the Charity Shield, Man City Vs Man United, Sunday 7th August 2011. As the teams ‘bed in’ it’s time to watch closely how they play. Will Man United play like they did last year, with an impeccable defensive record? Can Man City match Chelsea’s defensive record this season? This post digs a little deeper and give the goal betting enthusiasts some interesting information.

Joe Hart, goal keeper at Man City, is the highest scored goal keeper in the Fantasy Football team leagues for the latest premiership season. Points are awarded to goalies that keep the most clean sheets, amoungst other things. That’s not to say that they are the best but are part of the best defensive unit: that’s Mid Field, Defence and goal keeper.

Looking at performance just on the basis of clean sheets Manchester United’s number 1 David de Gea is top. 58 clean sheets in the past three seasons. That’s if Man United’s defensive performance wasn’t good enough anyway; they hold the joint best defensive record with Chelsea over the same period; 89 goals in 114 games.

Over the past three season Patrice Evra of Man United is also one of the best full backs based on Fantasy League points. Incidently Fantasy League points are made up of clean sheets, goals conceded, goals, and assists.

What has this lead us to beleive about Man City playing Manchester United in the Charity Shield?

Fantasy League points records can be helpful with football betting. It’s almost like a football rating system. No doubt there is probably a way to turn Fantasy Football points into a football betting ratings.

A Betfair bet trading strategy using goal betting

With the new Premiership football season fast approaching it’s time to investigate some interesting methods for trading football matches on Betfair. Basic bet trading on Betfair is simple. It’s a case of back high, lay low, or vice versa, lay low and back high. Simplicity in itself. Those unfamiliar with Betfair and or trading on Betfair might not find it such a piece of cake. Take a look at the Betfair FAQ, and, how to make a Betfair trade, for a better explanation.

Successful goal betting is all about have good information and stats that reveal which games will produce goals and which won’t. Trading goal bets is a good way to profit from this information. As long as the odds move in a predictable way then a trade can be made. The difficult bit is knowing which matches will be football gold (that’s profit in the pocket) and which will be a bore.

The followiing stats can be very useful for selecting which football matches to trade;

Stats for 2 goals or less and 3 goals or more.
Average goals per match.
Time of first goal.
First team to score.
Both teams to score.
Clean sheets.

Using this information is very useful when deciding which games to trade on Betfair. Some traders like to use a strict set of rules when it comes to trading football games. However, something we prefer and as I have noticed on the forums of Bet Trader, many other traders prefer is to adapt rules to specific games.

Carlos Tavez moves back to Brazil, get the goal betting stats for top scoring Englishman

Carlos Tavez is set to move to the Brazilian football club Corinthians. Much to the disbelief of Man City fans who were relying on Tavez to advance their dreams of chlallening Man United for the Premiership title. Carlos Tavez was one of the favourites in the top goal scoring betting market. With the withdrawal of Tevez Wayne Rooney becomes favourite.

Update.  Tavez hasn’t moved to Brazil but he’s moved away from Man City, so it’s the same difference!

At Let’s Compare Bet’s we have mentioned that Wayne Rooney looks like a good bet in this market. Another goal betting market worth considering is the top scoring Englishman in the premiership this season. The change in odds for Wayne Rooney has revealed value in this market.

Wayne Rooney is one of the favourites in the top goal scoring markets. This may have made his odds a little short for top goal scoring Englishman.

Wayne Rooney is favourite and Darren Bent is second favourite. Here are some stats. Wayne Rooney scores an average of 16 goals per season, whereas, Darren Bent scores an average of 17. The stats suggest that Wayne Rooney’s odds are too short and that Darren bent for top scoring Englishman is a better bet.

Frank Lampard and Jermain Defoe both have odds at around 12/1. Frank scored an average of 14.6 goals per season and Jermain scored an average of 10.6. Darren Bent still looks like the best value.

Decide who you think will be top scoring Englishman.

Back lay arbitrage betting using Betfair and bookmakers

During our investigation into horse lay betting strategies another entirely different idea cropped up. It’s the idea of betting exchange and bookmaker arbitrage. A strategy that exploits the differences between the bookmaker odds and betting exchange odds. It’s something that can be repeated over and over which is what makes it attractive.

Specifically this type of betting is called back lay betting. A back bet is made with a bookmaker with a corresponding lay bet being made at a betting exchange like Betfair (Betfair FAQ). The rule is back high and lay at lower odds.

Bookmaker odds compared to Betfair odds

There is always a difference between bookmaker odds and Betfair odds. The reason for this is that Betfair odds are set by the market and not by a bookmaker who needs to protect profit margins. In general the odds on Betfair are always better than those at the bookmaker. Some bookmaker’s are very competitive, like Pinacle Sports, who try to compete with Betfair. Pinacle Sports are an online only bookmaker, as such they have low overheads, and are able to compete on price. The difference between bookmaker and Betfair odds are not large enough to generate arbitrage opportunities, in part, due to the commission that Betfair charges on profits. Betfiar commission is normally 5%.

So, when do Betfair back lay arbitrage betting opportunities occur?

Whilst investigating horse lay betting strategies on Betfair something our researchers observed was that the odds on certain horses tend to shorten suddenly by quite large amounts. Horses who’s odds do this are called steamers. If the odds shorten it creates an opportunity to back the horse with a bookmaker and lay the same horse at lower odds on Betfair.

What causes a horses odds to shorten?

It could be a number of things. A tipster or perhaps people acting on insider information resulting in an influx of money on the exchange. Either way what tends to happen is that people somewhere, who have this information, make large bets using this information. Either one Betfair, at a track side bookmaker or a traditional bookmaker. What happens is the information filters through to Betfair and the odds shorten. This leaves a profitable gap in the odds between Betfair and all the other bookmakers who haven’t been involved with these bets.

What can happen sometimes is that the odds on Betfair reverse because bookmakers actually use Betfair to hedge some of the bets they take. If they take an unusual amount of money on a particular horse they may lay it on the exchange to hedge their loses if that horse wins.
